OPPO launched its first-ever Flip phone, the OPPO Find N2 Flip, to astounding fanfare. When we first released our impression and review, we had a deluge of inquiries on availability and price. And apparently, in other parts of the world, the device garnered as much as 452% increase in pre-orders than previous OPPO flagship phones.
The compact design, feature-rich internals, and one of the best foldable displays in the market, all contributed to the smart device’s success. But one of the key factors that made the phone stood out among the crowd of foldables lies with the updated Flexion Hinge that was first found on the OPPO Find N.
The Next Generation Flexion Hinge
On the OPPO Find N2 Flip, the Flexion Hinge has been re-tooled and made more compact and light without compromising any of its key features. The new cam system and 1/4 spindle assembly can hold its form part-folded between 45° and 110° — giving you more option like when choosing to hold the phone up and setting it up in FlexForm Mode. Pretty much allowing you to position the OPPO Find N2 Flip in any flat surface and binge your favorite shows or conduct video call sessions without the need to constantly hold the phone in your hands. Take long exposure shots with ease!
Aside from the new system, the choice of hinge materials has been updated as well, featuring a flexible stainless-steel element that is precision etched, and injected with a soft, pliable material.
Aeronautical high-strength steel at the key bearing position ensures the hinge to deliver higher reliability, that the tensile strength is up to 15%, and the yield strength is up to 25%, according to Data from OPPO Labs . Lastly, the aircraft-grade carbon-fiber reinforced polymer is there to make sure the hinge is strong but light.
The upgraded hinge helps guide the screen into a “waterdrop” fold when the Find N2 is shut which reduces the crease significantly compared to U-shape hinges found on other foldables. the display will have a very light crease and less screen deformation. The result? Better flexibility, firmer structure, and a better display when unfolded.
Superior Features
Another distinguishing factor of the OPPO Find N2 Flip is its large cover screen. The 3.26″ display is one of the biggest in the market for a flip phone and this is, in part, thanks to the smaller hinges. According to OPPO, the smaller hinge also makes a high-capacity, fast-charging battery possible, and its robustness helps to create unique, part-folded experiences and upgrade durability.
The large 3.26″ cover display easily gives you more screen real estate and consume more rich media than others. See your notifications, weather information, and even quickly reply to messages faster with a larger cover screen display — there’s even an interactive pet wallpaper that adds more quirkiness to the device.
For selfie lovers, the Flexion Hinge and the larger cover display allows you to utilize the main camera to take photos of yourselves and your loved ones. We’re talking about a 50 MP, f/1.8 main shooter color calibrated by Hasselblad.
Find N2 Flip’s photography highlights don’t stop there. With Dual Preview, give users’ subjects a cover screen preview of themselves, and part-fold the phone to unlock FlexForm Mode – perfect for time-lapses, video calls and long-exposure photography.
Lastly, the OPPO Find N2 Flip has a much larger 4300mAh battery with a 44W SuperVOOC flash charging capability made possible because of the smaller Flexion Hinge. While other Flip phones have about 3500-3700mAh, the engineers at OPPO were able to pack the Find N2 Flip with more juice so you can enjoy utilizing this magical gizmo longer than most.
A New Era in Flip Phones
It’s interesting how this little upgrade was able to help open up so much more functionality and design optimization for OPPO’s latest devices. With the brand’s commitment in design innovation and optimization, the future of foldables seems to be in great hands.
While still quite in its nascent stage, the miniaturized hinge doesn’t sacrifice durability, with the phone having been tested to 400,000 folds by TÜV Rheinland – the equivalent for withstanding normal usage for around 10 years (average of 100 folds/day). The new hinge design also closes any hinge gap from before — preventing dust and airborne particles from collecting along the crease line.
